Nvidia’s graphics cards are not only limited to personal computers. They excel at designing powerful graphics processors for mobile devices; the RTX 4080 Mobile chip is a great example. Nearing the performance of external GPUs like the RTX 3080Ti and RTX 4070, the RTX 4080 Mobile has some commendable attributes, making it worthy of everyone’s attention.
The RTX 3080Ti and RTX 4080 Mobile are highly distinctive from each other because, first, the 4080 Mobile is purely oriented for laptops, and second, both GPUs feature different generations of processing chips, making their performance and power efficiency vary by a lot.
The RTX 4080 Mobile uses the most novel and modern architecture from Nvidia, the Ada Lovelace, while the RTX 3080Ti is based on Nvidia’s previous microarchitecture, the Ampere. Although 3080Ti’s architecture is excellent in all manners, the newer Ada Lovelace architecture has proven to be more robust, efficient, and powerful.
Similarly, both GPUs utilize a different type of chip with manufacturing and die sizes. The 4080 Mobile uses the latest 5nm fabrication technology compared to the 3080Ti’s 8nm. The smaller fabrication size of the mobile chip allows Nvidia to pack millions of more transistors while keeping the die size relatively small.
Moreover, both chips not only have different sizes but also get different kinds of cores, fulfilling the same purpose. The 4080 Mobile is fitted with generationally better cores, which offer much more stable results and are more relevant to the modern graphics computing landscape.

The RTX 4080 Mobile is surprisingly on par with the RTX 3080Ti with its clock speeds. The RTX 3080Ti starts at a core frequency of 1365 MHz, while the 4080 Mobile starts a little lower at 1290 MHz. However, the boost core clock for both graphics chips is identical, as both can reach a peak speed of 1665 MHz.
Furthermore, the RTX 4080 Mobile comprises a much faster memory clock, almost two times faster than the RTX 3080Ti. It offers a memory speed of 2250 MHz, on par with the most potent GPUs of its generation. Meanwhile, the 3080Ti memory operates at around 1188 MHz.
Base Clock | 1365 MHz | 1290 MHz |
Boost Clock | 1665 MHz | 1665 MHz |
Memory Clock | 1188 MHz 19 Gbps effective | 2250 MHz 18 Gbps effective |
Both graphics processors feature a 12 Gigabyte memory. However, their memory types vary enough to introduce a noticeable performance difference. The RTX 4080 Mobile is equipped with a GDDR6 memory, and the RTX 3080Ti has the more responsive GDDR6X memory.
Moreover, the 4080 Mobile is severely limited by its 192-bit bus. Meanwhile, the RTX 3080Ti gets the complete high-end privilege and utilizes a 384-bit to its fullest extent. This also sways the bandwidth rating of the RTX 3080Ti to a higher side because it will operate at bandwidths of more than 900 GB/sec, whereas the 4080 Mobile’s bandwidth won’t cross the 500 GB/sec mark.

The RTX 4080 Mobile differs from mainstream external GPUs and isn’t designed like one. It is essentially a chip, like a CPU, pre-fitted onto a motherboard specifically designed for mobile devices. Hence, its dimensions aren’t as important. Nevertheless, it requires only about 110 Watts of power to function, which bodes well for its overall efficiency.
The RTX 3080Ti measures 285mm long and 112mm wide. It also has 320 Watts of TDP, requiring substantial power and thermal systems to work decently. Moreover, it uses a 12-pin VGA connector to get the requisite power and offers a plethora of display output ports.
