Key Differences

RTX 3080 is an excellent GPU with high-end features and a pretty outstanding performance that has stood the test of time. The RTX 3080Ti is also similarly powerful but takes it up a notch in terms of performance and robustness.

Throughout the 2020s, both of these GPUs have managed to establish dominance in the world of PC gaming and have never shied away from delivering an ultimate and definitive experience. However, the RTX 3080Ti somewhat introduces more finesse because it fixes and addresses many complaints synonymous with the RTX 3080.

Overall, both are pretty similar in umbrella terms, but the RTX 3080Ti is truly and factually superior to its slightly older counterpart.

Why you should consider Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti

  1. The RTX 3080Ti has a larger VRAM capacity, 20% more than the RTX 3080.
  2. It also has a higher core count and cache size than the RTX 3080.
  3. Moreover, it offers higher data bandwidths, making it faster and more responsive.

Why you should consider Nvidia RTX 3080

  1. It is cheaper than the RTX 3080Ti and costs over 100$ less with an almost similar performance.
  2. It requires slightly less power and remains considerably cooler at peak performance conditions.
  3. It offers higher clock frequencies with a smaller price tag.

Graphics Processor

The RTX 3080 and RTX 3080Ti have identical graphics processors. This chip is designed on Nvidia’s “Ampere” microarchitecture and uses the 8nm Samsung foundry’s fabrication technology. Both GPUs also have a similar die size of 628mm2 and contain the same number of transistors.

Their use of the same chip as before warrants some benefits. Although a higher core count will introduce an extra power penalty, Nvidia has managed to keep it as low as possible with only a 30-watt increment.

However, the crucial improvement of the RTX 3080 lies deep within its chip, where Nvidia has put around 10% more cores, making it very similar to the RTX 3090 in terms of performance and per-watt efficiency.

GPU Clocks

The RTX 3080Ti is 15 – 18% superior overall in performance and other related aspects. But it achieves this feat with a slightly lower clock rate than the RTX 3080. Surprisingly enough, the RTX 3080Ti has clock rates less than the RTX 3080, with both boost and based clock speeds having a ~5% difference.

Furthermore, regarding memory speeds, both GPUs are twins with no significant difference whatsoever.

Base Clock 1365 MHz 1440 MHz
Boost Clock 1665 MHz 1710 MHz
Memory Clock 1188 MHz, 19 Gbps effective 1188 MHz, 19 Gbps effective

Memory Specifications

Speaking of distinctions, the RTX 3080Ti gets noticeably more memory capacity than the same GDDR6X type. Compared to the 3080’s 10 GB memory, the 3080Ti contains 12 Gigs of video memory.

Moreover, the 3080Ti has a much wider memory bus that offers 384-bit connectivity, whereas the 3080 only provides a 320-bit bus. This 384-bit bus aligns much closer to the high-end experience that the top-end Nvidia GPUs are known for.

A consequence of getting a broader bus connection is outstanding memory bandwidths. Where the RTX 3080 features a peak bandwidth of only 760 GB/sec, the RTX 3080Ti provides bandwidths for up to 912 GB/sec, which are much closer to the likes of RTX 3090Ti, 4090, and RX 7900XTX.

Memory Size 12GB 10GB
Memory Type GDDR6X GDDR6X
Memory Bus 384 bit 320 bit

Board Specifications

The two graphics cards in question are quite similar in their dimensions. They measure 285mm in length, 112mm in height, and 40mm in width. However, the 3080Ti boasts a more powerful GPU within the same package. This is a noteworthy advantage that can make a significant difference in performance.

Regarding display outlets, both graphics cards are identical and come equipped with 1 HDMI 2.1 port and 3 DisplayPort 1.4a ports. These display outlets allow you to connect your graphics card to various devices such as monitors, projectors, and televisions. This feature makes it more versatile and convenient for users with varying display needs.

The performance boost of the RTX 3080Ti comes with a slightly higher power requirement of 350W relative to the 320W requirement of the 3080. However, this additional power isn’t very significant considering that it doesn’t require a PSU upgrade and works on the same 12-pin VGA power connector.
